ARMIN VAN BUUREN LINKS UP WITH EUROVISION SONG CONTEST WINNER DUNCAN LAURENCE ON ‘FEEL SOMETHING’ !

By Alex Cristian – November 6, 2020 2 0

magazine DJ Mag for nineteen years in a row now, and could secure his twentieth consecutive Top 100 spot when the results of the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll of 2020 will be revealed tomorrow (Saturday, November 7). Duncan Laurence has been enjoying a meteoric rise to stardom ever since he took 2019’s Eurovision Song Contest (and its 200-plus-million viewers) by storm with winning entry ‘Arcade’. Follow us on socials Working together with him was an absolute blessing and I am very proud of the result. “Whenever I’m writing a song, I try to draw from the most recognizable life-altering events around me and find the little things that suddenly feel so different because of it”, Duncan Laurence explains when asked about the inspiration for the song. I wrote it together with Leland (Brett McLaughlin, known for songs from the likes of Troye Sivan and Selena Gomez), and it’s about rather feeling something than nothing at all, even though it may cause that gut-wrenching feeling in the pit of the stomach or a tear on the cheek. He has ranked in the Top 100 of U.K. Reflecting on the pain of heartbreak on a backdrop of gritty beats and touches of synth pop, ‘Feel Something’ came together after Armin and Duncan Laurence decided to hit the studio together following a first meet-up at the Top 40 Awards in Amsterdam. Now a superstar in his own right, Duncan Laurence is currently preparing for the release of his debut artist album called ‘Small Town Boy’. And that’s what ‘Feel Something’ is about. At least you ‘Feel Something’. “Not only because they love music just as much as I do, but also because it reminds me that I am so lucky to be able to create music with other people and do this for a living. It’s fresh and new, and we put a lot of love in it. This time, the five-time #1 DJ in the world teamed up with fellow-Dutchman and singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence on ‘Feel Something’, a pop-dance track that’s bound to resonate strongly with all who listen. Marking the Dutch singer-songwriter’s big breakthrough, the song hit #1 in Spotify’s Global Viral Chart upon release, racked up almost 300 million streams across the most popular streaming platforms worldwide since and even went viral on TikTok, where the song has been used over 600.000 times so far. Armin van Buuren has been stringing quite a few surprising collaborations in the past few years, and today’s single marks another addition to that list. I’m very happy that the message of this song gets to see the light of day, and I am super proud that I got to do this with someone like Armin.”

“I always feel blessed working with very talented singer-songwriters”, Armin van Buuren adds. We intended to let listeners ‘Feel Something’, and that’s exactly what this record does.”

Armin van Buuren was voted the #1 DJ in the world for an unprecedented five times. If you’ve ever heard Duncan Laurence perform live: that voice… what a gift! The album is due on November 13 and will feature smash hit ‘Arcade’ as well as recent singles ‘Someone Else’, ‘Love Don’t Hate It’ and ‘Feel Something’. Moreover, Armin van Buuren recently released a new single called ‘Need You Now’ alongside Jake Reese and will soon hit the incredible milestone of 1000 episodes with his A State Of Trance radio show, through which he reaches 40 million listeners from 80 different countries on a weekly basis. “The vacant chair on the other side of the kitchen table, the empty half of a double bed, that kind of stuff. Even though it hurts, it’s also a memory of something beautiful.

Henri PFR & Famba drop the heat with collab single ‘No One Knows’ (feat. Chiara Castelli) !

By Alex Cristian – November 6, 2020 3 0

Henri and I went back and forth on the production for almost a year. Up and coming Belgian artist Henri PFR has struck an exciting collab with Canadian youngster Famba for the lively pop tune ‘No One Knows’. It’s a little more electro than what I usually do, but I’m extremely proud to share this side of my world! I’m also happy to finally be able to release this track. As both these artists have been leaving their mark on the global dance scene with an impressive series of vocally driven dance tracks, this collab represents a new momentum for them. “‘No One Knows’ is a song that was produced in Amsterdam just over a year ago! There was such a good feeling in the studio that the core melody of the song was done in just a few hours. Out now on Spinnin’ Records. But thanks to these two producers at the controls, it also brings the flow and energy of a dance track, sure to raise smiles all over the globe. Henri PFR and Famba have perfectly aligned their productional skills here, using a nice punchy bassline as well as tasty synth stabs, warm strings and reverb effects to create a cool, spacious atmosphere. It’s a vintage pop song, thanks to its infectious chorus line, and lyrics that articulate how we experience love. ‘No One Knows’ kicks off with the gentle vocals of Swiss influencer/singer Chiara Castelli, sliding into a sweet singalong chorus before a sweet electro house groove gets things moving. The song really took on a new life when I compare the final version to the demo.” – Famba. Featuring the warm vocals of Chiara Castelli, it’s turned into tempting piece of dance music, incorporating sultry grooves with a tasty chorus ready to heat up every playlist this autumn season. This vocal melody has been stuck in my mind for so long that I can’t wait to share it with the world.” – Henri PFR“The song started a year ago at ADE, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. Will Atkinson released his ‘Last King Of Scotland’ album !

By Alex Cristian – November 6, 2020 2 0

A body of music that seamlessly fuses trance, techno & drum n’ bass with progressive & poetry, ambient & acid and harmony & hard dance, it immediately vies for the tag of ‘timeless’. The most anticipated debut artist album of 2020 has arrived, as genius Scottish producer Will Atkinson delivers a seventeen-track LP that’s nothing less than a masterpiece. Sometimes though, the greater the test, the greater the spirit capable of being mustered, which was very much the case for Will. At his mellowest, Will’s productions regularly subvert trance’s staples, while at his most overt, they flat-out punk them. Over the last 10 years he’s thrown ever more effort in taking it out of its comfort zone, and in that pursuit, the ‘Last King Of Scotland’ may be its final reckoning. If there’s a bright centre in the electronic music universe, Orkney may very well be the island farthest from it. An insurgent attitude that’s made him one of trance’s few real agents of change. Follow us on socials    Few then would expect seventeen dyed-in-the-wool trancers from him, but fewer still would anticipate the expanse of range he’s arrived with. Brave, heartfelt and instinctual when club momentum’s required, urbane, to the point of intellectual when it’s not, it’s the ultimate subversion of ‘the trance album’. A virtual synonym for ‘remote’, it’s a one-club ‘town’, which presents a unique set of challenges to a DJ/musician wanting to send a message to all four corners. The ‘Last King Of Scotland’ is a musical journey like no other, but also an intoxicating and often-hypnotic collection, which is a musical narration of Will’s own path. Over the airwaves, Orkney saw him hoover up all manner of dance music manna, before adulthood proved the final catalyst for his move to Glasgow.Sharpening his genre focus, he reflects that the city “unlocked a new realm… The Arches, Sub Club, squat parties – long nights turning into longer days as I embraced, he says, the new raw, urban backdrop that would form and vandalise me into the producer and artist I am today.”

Will’s approach to his sets and studio work regularly have a ‘little-to-lose’ edge to them. Thus, if your first sense of ‘Last King’ feels atypical in any way, it’s for excellent reason. That of a patriotic, electronic music loving boy growing up in a far-flung corner before moving on, out and up to global recognition.
